How to Measure Your Garage Door

Measuring a garage door can be quite a task if not done properly. They are usually required to be measured before the installation process or when you need a garage door replacement. Garage doors, just like any other doors of your house, are measured through the casing present around them.

To accurately measure a garage door, you need to take the measurements on the inside of the door, which includes the door opening, the headroom, the back room, and the side room.

Measure Garage Door: Installation Guide

Here is a small guide that will help you measure the garage door through a few fairly easy steps:

  1. Measure the height and width of the widest point of the garage door opening, which is the distance between the left side and right side of the same. Make sure to omit any door jambs or deformities in your measurements. These measurements will help you determine the size of the garage door that you will need to buy.

  2. To ensure that there is ample space to fit the vertical portion of the garage door, you need to measure the side room of the door next. These measurements are done from the outside of the door jamb to the wall on which the garage door will be mounted.

  3. The next step is to measure the space that runs between the top of the garage door opening to the ceiling or the lowest obstruction on the ceiling. This is known as the headroom measurements and is essential while measuring your garage door for installation or replacement. The headroom measurements usually differ according to the material of the door required.

  4. The last step is to measure the depth of the garage. This is known as the backroom measurement. It essentially requires you to measure along with the ceiling that runs between the garage door opening to the farthest point of the garage’s rear or the closest obstruction.
